Civil War Hero's Grave Vandalized

It doesn’t seem like much – just a few overturned stones and a cracked slab on a wooded knoll in Apponaug – but someone decided it was worth destroying.

Such wanton destruction has Pegee Malcolm infuriated and saddened that the vandals apparently lack any knowledge of the man whose gravesite they have desecrated.

“I’m sure they have no idea who George Sears Greene was,” Malcolm said after a visit to the historic burial ground off

Greene, whose family played a role in the founding of Rhode Island and the Revolutionary War, was born in 1801 in the red house near Apponaug Four Corners, only a short distance from where he was buried.

Greene was an engineer who built railroads and aqueducts. He was a graduate of West Point, second in his class, and had the rare distinction of being a professor of mathematics while still a junior at the academy. He was more than 60 years of age when the Civil War divided the country and Greene left his civilian life to join the Union Army. While he earned the name of “Paps” as one of the war’s oldest colonels, his ability as a leader and his success on the battlefield were soon recognized and he was promoted to major general. The apex of his military career was his defense of Culp’s Hill in the battle of Gettysburg. He was in command of the 3rd Brigade of New Yorkers with 1,350 men. His unit held off 9,000 Confederates, securing the right flank of the Union Army.

“Culp’s Hill was really the key to the battle. He saved our country,” says Gregg Mierka, state commander of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.

Mierka says the boulder that marks Greene’s gravesite as important as the Iwo Jima monument and the Vietnam Memorial. The boulder was brought here from Culp’s Hill.

“The boulder there is the one he stood on when bullets were flying around him,” says Mierka.

Indicative of his engineering background, Greene insisted that his troops build strong fortifications that proved their worth as he and his men repelled multiple attacks that continued into the night and the following day.

No fortifications protect his burial ground.

A wrought-iron fence once defined the cemetery and the grave of its most renowned occupant was marked by a bronze plaque and sword. The plaque and sword were cut from the stone years ago and if it had not been for the diligence of an honorable scrap metal dealer, who recognized the significance of what he had been offered as scrap, the memorial would have been melted down and incorporated into some other object. The plaque and sword are now safely on display in City Hall.

Only a few sections of the old fence are still standing near the rock from Gettysburg.

But George Sears Greene was not forgotten. Three years ago the Sons of Union Veterans of Civil War mounted a drive to have an appropriate marker at the cemetery. They got help from many, including Brain Guiot, who provided the stone on which the wording of the plaque and a sword were etched and the city’s Department of Public Works pulled it up the hill to the cemetery. The council approved $2,750 for the project.

Now the monument has been cracked by the marker for Green’s wife, Martha Dana Greene, which was toppled from its pedestal. Several other headstones have been pushed over into the long grass of the small cemetery.

Malcolm, who is president of the Warwick Historic Cemetery Commission, wants to stop the vandalism. She says it is a persistent problem at the city’s 150 historic cemeteries. The commission is offering a $100 reward for information that leads to the vandals’ arrest. She said the commission would prosecute if suspects were identified.

Mierka deplores the vandalism.

“Without our history we have no future; we’re destroying our roots, where we came from,” he said.

Mierka is playing a key role organizing the 100th anniversary of the rededication of the Greene monument in Gettysburg to be held Sept. 22. Mayor Scott Avedisian is expected to attend the event in Gettysburg, as are descendants of the general, retired Army Lt. Col. John G. Greene, who lives in Brussels, Belgium, and General Greene’s great-granddaughter, Joan Pierpont of Connecticut.

Recruited five years ago by Madeline Toy for the commission, Malcolm is also vice president of the Rhode Island Advisory Commission on Historic Cemeteries. She is on a campaign to have historic cemeteries adopted by volunteers who will see that they are cared for. So far, 100 of the city’s historic cemeteries have been adopted. Among volunteers are the Boy and Girl Scouts, the Elks, neighborhood associations and companies whose property abuts or is near a cemetery.

“They don’t get enough credit for what they do,” she said of the volunteers who donate time and equipment to keep the cemeteries looking presentable. The adoptions add another dimension – someone watchful of a cemetery – that she hopes will stem vandalism.

As for the damage done to the general’s marker, Malcolm hopes the stone can be sealed, although Mierka says there is sentiment to leave it cracked as a reminder of the vandalism. Besides, he added, to replace it would probably cost $5,000.

Following a Channel 12 story on the vandalism, Malcolm said she received a call from Toni Dowell and Scott Bruce of Creative Welding. She said she met them at the cemetery on Sunday and said they will provide a backhoe to lift fallen stones and monuments.

Malcolm also noted that the desecration comes shortly before the Sept. 22 observance.

“It is so sad that they are destroying here when they are celebrating him,” she said.

Malcolm and members of the city commission will discuss cemetery adoption at a Nov. 29 meeting at the Warwick Public Library. Commission meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Annex. “Anyone is welcome to attend,” says Malcolm.
